Helicopter and lifeboat swoop in to save three trapped walkers at Baldoyle

These were the dramatic scenes as a rescue helicopter and lifeboat swooped in to save three trapped walkers stuck on a sandbank at a popular Dublin beach.

The Coast Guard alarm was raised shortly after 3:30pm on Monday afternoon as the three walkers were trapped by the water coming in to Baldoyle Estuary.

The Estuary between Baldoyle and Portmarnock is a popular spot for walkers, but the flood tides have been known to catch some out.

Luckily, a rescue operation was launched and the Howth Coast Guard Unit, as well as the Howth RNLI, were quick on the scene.

The three people were rescued and brought to shore by lifeboat.

A Coast Guard spokesperson told Dublin Live: “This afternoon, shortly after 3.30pm, the Coast Guard was alerted to an incident involving three people who were stranded on a sandbank at Baldoyle Estuary.

"A rescue operation was coordinated by the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Dublin.

"Howth Coast Guard Unit and Howth RNLI were tasked to the scene where all three casualties were taken safely ashore by the RNLI lifeboat."
