Helen George confirms return to BBC's Call the Midwife as filming begins on series 12

Call the Midwife fans will be delighted to hear that Helen George is returning for the 12th series of the period drama as her much-loved character Nurse Trixie Franklin. The 39-year-old star left the last series early to go on maternity leave but will be making a welcomed comeback in the new series.

During episode five of series 11, Helen's character Trixie left Nonnatus House to go and look after her godmother in Italy who had taken ill but promised Matthew, who she was in a blossoming relationship with, that she would return - and it seems like Trixie kept her promise! On Monday, April 26, the Call the Midwife social media accounts shared a picture of Helen back on set filming a night shoot for the twelfth series.

The post read: "Our first week of filming the brand new Series 12 involves both day and night shooting - and guess who made a welcome return to Nonnatus house last night for her first scene... Trixie! Played of course by our lovely Helen George."

Helen, who has been part of drama since it first broadcast in 2012, had taken time away from the show to give birth to her second daughter Lark, who she shares with former Call the Midwife star and actor Jack Ashton. The pair also welcomed their first daughter Wren back in 2017.

The post continued: "While Helen has been away she's had a little 'midwife calling' of her own to do, as she is now the proud mother of two! Her gorgeous new daughter, Lark, was born late last year, and Helen is now ready to get back into the saddle of her bicycle to minister to the women of Poplar once more! We are thrilled to have her back, and just can't wait to show you the next developments in Trixie's journey".

The actress added a comment on the Instagram post saying: "Glad to be back on the saddle and ready for CTM 12 - Return of the Zombie Nuns" with her co-star Laura Main who plays Shelagh Turner adding: "Loving all these first day back pics!".

It's the second update shared with fans this week as on Monday, April 25, a picture was posted of Jenny Agutter (Sister Julienne) and Linda Bassett (Nurse Crane) with the first clapperboard of the series. The news has sparked excitement in fans, who are delighted to see the much-loved star returning, with many already hoping Trixie will finally find her happy ending with Matthew Aylward.

"Amazing I can't wait to see @helen_george again X," Paul tweeted whilst Dawn Smith added: "Please now let her have her happy ending with Matthew!".

Natz posted: "Love Trixie she's always been my favourite from first series" and @Sanditonian1 tweeted: "Yay! I was wondering if she would be returning! #CallTheMidwife". Emily Rose added: "one of my all time faves I’m TOO EXCITED".

Call the Midwife returns later this year with a new Christmas special and series 12 will air in 2023. All episodes of the period drama are available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.
