Heavy rain causes major flooding in parts of Wales

Heavy rain has caused severe flooding across parts of Wales.

Several roads are closed and police warned of "atrocious" driving conditions for commuters on Wednesday.

The worst hit areas are Wrexham, Flintshire and Denbighshire.

The A548 at Flintshire has been closed because of heavy flooding at multiple stretches of the road between Mostyn and Bagillt.

North Wales Police warned: "Huge problems with flooding across the force area especially Flint, Greenfield and Bagillt on the A548 and surrounding area currently. Please avoid the area where possible."

A spokesman added: "Weather and road conditions are atrocious. Please slow down wherever you may be going. Assess the need for your journey, drive to the conditions and your driving ability. Please DO NOT ignore any road closure signs."

Just before midday police warned that the River Alyn had burst its banks.

Flintshire Council said they had had staff out all night and had brought in "extra resources" to deal with localised flooding issues.

A spokesman said that sandbags were ready if required.

The roads they warned about were:

  • stretches of the A548 Flint to Denbighshire border
  • A5118 Padeswood
  • A548 Bagillt Bypass
  • Kelsterton Lane

Transport for Wales tweeted: "Continued heavy rain during today means that travel to and from your desired destination cannot be guaranteed."

Their service between Wrexham General and Bidston has been suspended because of the flooding.

Virgin Trains between Llandudno Junction and Crewe and Chester were also said to be affected.

Natural Resources Wales has got one flood warning in place in the Lower Dee Valley and nine flood alerts.

A weather warnings is in place for parts of Wales this morning.

The Met Office has warned there was a small chance homes and businesses could be flooded and the weather could lead to difficult driving conditions and road closures.

This week has seen showers and thunderstorms in many parts of the UK with a persistent band of rain edging north and west as the week has continued.

Met Office are in place until Thursday.
