Users of iPads and iPhones have been urged to avoid using their devices in direct sunlight for lengthy periods of time as a heatwave approaches. The warning has been given by a man whose family learned the hard and costly way about the impact hot weather can have on the technology.
Richard Atwell posted a message on the Nextdoor website about an incident involving his wife's iPad, which broke after being kept out in hot weather. He put out the message ahead of the upcoming weather front, which has led to the Met Office issuing its first ever red extreme heat warning, which comes into effect on Monday (July 18) and Tuesday (July 19), LeicestershireLive reports.
Mr Atwell, who lives in the Midlands, said: "A costly lesson to learn. My wife left her iPad (just over two years old) in direct sunlight indoors at the weekend. While it is still receiving messages etc, she cannot access them as the “swipe” function will not work.

"Took it to Apple in Birmingham, they can only offer a replacement costing £390.00 as they cannot do diagnostic tests. Luckily we have an older spare for the present. Please learn from this."
Apple has also issued a warning to people with iPads and iPhones as the nation prepares to be hit by a heatwave. The manufacturer advises the following:
- Leave the device in a car on a hot day.
- Put the device in direct sunlight for an extended period of time.
- Users should also avoid using certain features in hot conditions or direct sunlight for an extended period of time, such as GPS tracking or navigation in a car, playing a graphics-intensive game or using augmented reality apps.
