Heartwarming moment boy with cerebral palsy dribbles football for first time

Only a few years ago football-mad Jaye Cook was unable to take a single step unaided.

But this month, the 11-year-old, who was born with cerebral palsy, managed to dribble a football down a pitch without support for the first time.

His speechless mum Mel, from Kingswood, said she could barely believe her eyes when she saw him stand up and start to kick the ball.

According to NHS England, cerebral palsy is a 'group of lifelong conditions that affect movement and co-ordination. It's caused by a problem with the brain that develops before, during or soon after birth'.

Six years ago, the Bristol Post helped back an appeal to raise £74,000 for Jaye to undergo a life-changing operation to help him walk.

Following the procedure, Jaye spent two hours every day working with a physiotherapist to build up muscles in his legs.

The Rovers fan still has to walk the majority of the time with a frame, which makes his feat even more impressive.

"I was just amazed," said Mel, 45. "It took me a second to process that he was actually doing it without a frame.

"He's worked so hard and he's so determined. He's always dreamed of becoming a footballer so to see on the pitch was amazing."

Jaye is a member of Bristol's Frame Football team where he hopes to continue to develop his skills.

Two years ago, Jaye was presented with a themed Bristol Rovers wheelchair by players at his beloved club. A huge fundraiser was launched to raise money after his walker and wheelchair were stolen from outside his home.

The appeal was shared by comedian Jason Manford and in just 24 hours, £5,000 was raised for the family.
