Hearts' Daniel Stendel statement takes thinly-veiled dig at Hibs

When it comes to petty wind ups then few can match Scottish football for patter.

Hearts and Hibs have had their fair share of battles off the field and the latest sees the Tynecastle outfit take a thinly-veiled dig at their rivals as they announced their new boss.

Daniel Stendel was confirmed as first team manager on Saturday evening and even in the club's statement they couldn't resist the urge to get one over Hibs.

The Easter Road club have themselves recently hired a new gaffer with Jack Ross taking the reins in Leith after leaving Sunderland.

Stendel was axed by Barnsley in October as well but the pair battled it out in League One last season.

And that's where Hearts got some ammunition to take a pop at Hibs in their statement as they confirmed Stendel on a two-and-a-half year contract.

Barnsley were promoted to the Championship while Sunderland failed to get through the play-offs and the statement said: "Having been relegated prior to his arrival, Daniel immediately turned round their fortunes, leading the Oakwell outfit to a second-placed finish ahead of Jack Ross’ Sunderland, and securing promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking."

Stendel was sacked by Barnsley after a run of 10 games without a win but his exit angered a lot of the club's fans.

They heavily criticised their board and even threw a leaving party at a local pub which saw the German attend.

The 45-year-old previously managed Hannover in the Bundesliga, a club where he scored 43 goals in 180 games during his playing career.
