Hearts and Hibs men feature for Australia as Martin Boyle sees 90 minutes in narrow New Zealand win

Hibs' Martin Boyle played 90 minutes for Australia as Hearts' Nathan Atkinson added a cap to his name in a narrow 1-0 win over New Zealand

The Easter Road winger is a shoe-in for a squad place at the World Cup in Qatar later this year and was given a full game to impress ahead of the major tournament. Atkinson meanwhile was brought off the bench in the second half as a goal from Awer Mabil sealed victory in front of over 25,000 at the Suncorp Stadium.

Former Hibs star Jackson Irvine partnered Celtic's Aaron Mooy in midfield with Hearts' Cammy Devlin an unused substitute ahead of their next friendly against New Zealand before returning to Tynecastle with Atkinson. Hibees hero Jason Cummings is part of the squad but was not involved as manager Graham Arnold experiments with every player at his disposal before picking the players who'll go to the biggest stage.

Hearts defender Kye Rowles was a standout in their qualification play-offs for the Qatar tournament and is in a fitness race against time to make the team.

Arnold said of the win: "We have still got a long way to go but New Zealand just got beat by Costa Rica. They could easily have qualified.

"If there was one negative, it was that we lost the physical battle, and you need to win those physical battles at the World Cup."
