Heartless vandals deface £200k Lanarkshire park as residents left outraged

Residents in Lanarkshire have been left devastated after a park, which was officially opened in November of last year, was defaced.

Those living near to the Roman themed play area at Auchinstarry are outraged after vandals damaged wooden structures and the equipment.

The £200,000 facility includes a Roman Fort with multiple levels and slides and wheelchair accessible items such as a trampoline and roundabout, as well as a rope swing and embankment slide.

It was created as part of the £2.1 million Rediscovering the Antonine Wall project which has been running since 2018 and finished in March 2023.

Heartless vandals have cut off the hands of the Roman soldier statues and removed some of the play equipment.

One resident told Glasgow Live: "It's disappointing.

"The council get the brunt of " we get nothing, what are we paying our council tax for" complaints all the time.

"Finally we get a cracking play area, with a wee bit of history and it gets vandalised by mindless selfish people."

A council spokesperson said: “We are extremely disappointed at this mindless vandalism to a very popular play area. We would appeal for anyone with information to contact Police Scotland.”
