Heartbroken mum angered after finding text which could have saved son's life

A grieving mum has told of her anguish at finding text messages revealing her tragic son’s suicidal thoughts.

Liam McGhee, 15, took his own life last August but his mum Jacqueline Malone was left devastated when his mobile was returned to the family by police this week.

It contained one of the last text messages he would receive from a female friend.

It read: “I thought you were actually gonna kill yourself”, to which Liam replied: “I am that’s what I’m just about to do. So bye.”

The messages were sent just hours before Liam’s body was found in a wooded area in his home town Kilmarnock.

Jacqueline said she was left devastated and angry by the text, which she believes could have saved Liam’s life if she had been told about it.

The 38-year-old said: “She didn’t tell me she received that message.

“I don’t blame her for Liam’s death but she did withhold information which could have saved him.”

Liam had earlier been placed on a vulnerable persons watchlist.

Jacqueline said: “Weeks before his death, I was told that Liam tried to kill himself.

“He was assessed as being of sound mind and I begged for help but there was no support.

“I remember saying at the time, ‘What will it take for me to be taken seriously? Is it going to take for Liam to die?’ and then it did.”

She added: “We need young people to have access to information and helplines.

“Liam was a victim and he did not know what was going on inside his own head but he needed others to help him.”
