Scott Amedure took the ultimate chance in his bid to start a relationship with the man of his dreams.
But instead of the happy ever after he had been so hoping for, it ended with his tragic death and the object of his desire behind bars, jailed for his murder.
Scott Amedure's murder, and the subsequent trial of his killer, Jonathan Schmitz, is now being examined in new Netflix series, Trial By Media.
Scott and Schmitz were both guests on The Jenny Jones Show, which was a chat show with increasingly controversial stories behind the appearances of those taking part.
In an excruiatingly awkward show back in 1995, Scott was one of the guests where he admitted he had a secret crush on Schmitz.
The two men were acquaintances and had known each other in their home town of Lake Orion, in Michigan, the US.
Schmitz had agreed to appear on The Jenny Jones Show when he was told he had a secret admirer, although he has always insisted he believed it was a woman, because he was "curious".
He claimed producers had hinted it was a woman, something they have always denied and instead say they told Schmitz it could be a man or a woman.
As Scott shared his intimate fantasties about Schmitz, his crush was brought out onto the stage in what was a very awkward encounter.
Reports at the time said "the two men exchanged an awkward embrace before the host dropped her bombshell".
Jenny Jones then dropped Scott's crush confession and Schmitz seemed to make a joke of the situation and laughed "you lied to me" before insisting he was "completely heterosexual".
He claimed following his appearance that he had believed he had been invited onto the show so he could get back together with his ex-girlfriend, who was pals with Scott.
Despite his reaction, following their appearance on the Jenny Jones Show, the two men are said to have gone out drinking together.
It is claimed a sexual act took place between them but just three days after they had filmed their appearance on The Jenny Jones Show, a single note would lead to tragedy.
Schmitz was sent a suggestive message, which he assumed was from Scott, and went straight to the cash point to take out enough cash to buy a shotgun.
He then went to Scott's home and confronted him about the note before shooting him twice, killing him immediately.
Schmitz, who had previously been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and Graves’ disease, which causes an overactive thyroid, handed himself straight into police and confessed to officers what he had done.
At his trial, he was found guilty of second degree murder, which is a killing that wasn't premeditated, was only intended to injure, and shows extreme indifference to human life.
Schmitz was jailed for between 25 and 30 years in 1996 but his conviction was overturned on appeal, only to be reinstated when he was tried for second tme.
Scott's family were initially awarded $29million, the equivalent of £23.5million, in compensation from The Jenny Jones Show and Warner Bros.
This was, again, later overturned on appeal, although Scott's family have always laid the blame for their son's death at the door of the show.
His father, Frank Amedure, Sr, said: "If they'd [Schmitz and Scott] never gone on 'The Jenny Jones Show' those two kids would be alright today."
He was released from prison in August 2017 and The Jenny Jones Show aired its final episode, amid plummeting ratings, in 2003.
