Headache could be Omicron says new report - here's the top five symptoms

While headaches are an everyday ailment, a headache is one of the top symptoms of Omicron according to new research.

As the number of daily Covid cases continue to break records, more and more people are falling ill with the virus.

Some of the cold-like symptoms of Omicron are headaches and a runny nose.

A new report from the ZOE Covid Study App has compared symptoms of Omicron and Delta and narrowed down the top five Omicron symptoms.

The ZOE Covid Study App was co-founded by epidemiologist Prof Tim Spector in March 2020 with analysis provided by King's College London.

Is a headache an Omicron symptom?

ZOE compared reports from users in December 2021 - when Omicron became the main variant - and compared it to data from early October 2021 when Delta was the dominant variant.

Its millions of users self-report symptoms into the app.

So could a headache be a sign of Omicron? Yes - but it might not necessarily be Omicron, according to the ZOE report published yesterday.

The analysis found 'no clear difference' in the symptom profile of Delta and Omicron.

The top five symptoms in both periods were:

  1. Runny nose

  2. Headache

  3. Fatigue (mild or severe)

  4. Sneezing

  5. Sore throat

However, only 50 per cent of people reported the 'classic' Covid symptoms of fever, cough and loss of taste or smell.

ZOE reported that they have seen the loss of taste and smell become much less common.

They wrote: "It was in the top 10 symptoms earlier in 2021, and now it's ranking at 17, with only 1 in 5 people experiencing it."
