Head-on bus crash near Pentagon injures 23 people including Defense Department workers

Two buses crashed head-on near a Pentagon bus stop on Friday, injuring 23 people, including Defense Department personnel - (AP)

Twenty-three people, including ten Defense Department personnel, are injured after two buses collided head-on near a Pentagon bus stop.

The incident, involving an Omni Ride and a Fairfax Connector bus, occurred shortly before 7:30 a.m. Friday morning.

It was captured on camera in video published by local CBS affiliate WUSA.

Eighteen of those hurt were taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, while five received treatment at the scene.

The crash prompted the closure of the Metro Access Road and caused significant disruption to mass transit operations for several hours.

The Arlington Fire Department responded to the crash but referred all enquiries to the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, the federal law enforcement body responsible for the Pentagon.

The cause of the crash remains unclear.
