'He's twice the player!' - Leeds United fans fume at Patrick Bamford's England omission

Leeds United fans have made their feelings known after Patrick Bamford was overlooked by England manager Gareth Southgate upon the announcement of his latest squad.

Ahead of three World Cup qualifiers towards the end of this month, the 27-year-old had been expected to receive a first call-up to the international scene.

However, the Three Lions have instead opted for Aston Villa frontman Ollie Watkins.

Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been named as part of the 23-man group, but there is no place for Bamford - or Luke Ayling - as England prepare to take on San Marino, Albania and Poland in the space of six days.

It's a double decision that has been met with widespread disapproval among the Leeds fans, especially with injuries to other attacking options such as Danny Ings, Tammy Abraham and Callum Wilson.

Bamford has 13 goals to his name in the Premier League so far this term, more than any other Englishman apart from national team captain Harry Kane (17) and Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin (14).

Here are a selection of comments posted by Leeds supporters on social media;

@lufcThommo said: "Actually feel gutted Patrick Bamford didn't get the call-up."

@DebsHLUFC posted: "I'm actually relieved we don't have players in the England squad. I totally get it's a massive achievement. However, when you look at what Southgate hasn't done to Phillips, imagine what he couldn't do with Bamford or Ayling..."

@ItsDanbob added: "Patrick Bamford is twice the player Ollie Watkins is."

@ConorMOT92 said: "Southgate hasn't got a clue. I can't wait for Bamford to bag a hat-trick tomorrow night and prove him wrong."

@thewsonbetts posted: "I was right with Southgate until he named Watkins over Bamford. Less goals, less assists, much worse xG performance. Appalling decision, regardless of how much I like and rate Watkins."

@gsfplexperiment added: "Really don't understand the Watkins over Bamford call-up? I like Watkins, I think he's a great player, but not at the expense of Bamford."

@FredgoldMartin said: "I didn't expect Ayling to get a call-up because England have plenty of RB/RWB. Bamford must feel a little disappointed not to get a call-up, as I think he would offer something different to what Southgate currently has available to him."

@whoisdougie posted: "Do you think the reason he isn't in the squad is because of the knock he picked up during the Chelsea game? That has to be the reason, as he's one of the top English strikers in the league at the moment."

@ReehanG28 added: "Watkins getting in the England team ahead of Bamford is an absolutely diabolical decision."
