'He loves Stevie' - Dirk Kuyt reacts to Luis Suarez to Aston Villa transfer rumours

Dirk Kuyt is hoping for something of a Liverpool reunion at Aston Villa amid transfer speculation surrounding Luis Suarez.

Kuyt's former captain with the Reds, Steven Gerrard, has already brought one of his ex-Anfield team-mates back to the Premier League, having signed Philippe Coutinho on loan earlier this month.

Now the new Aston Villa boss has been touted with an interest in signing Suarez from Atletico Madrid, further extending the possible Liverpool connections.

Asked about the potential transfer, Kuyt admitted he hoped to see the Uruguayan striker working together again with Gerrard and Coutinho but expressed his doubts over the move.

“I hope [he will return], but I’m not sure to be honest, I’m not sure,” Kuyt told talkSPORT.

“I think Luis had the opportunity after Barcelona to come back to the Premier League and he decided to stay in Spain, somehow maybe with the language he feels more comfortable.

“I know he loves Stevie [Gerrard] as well, so probably he wants to work with him.”

Suarez has previously said that playing for another English club 'would be hard' given the success of his spell at Liverpool.

He scored 82 goals in 133 games for the Reds during his three-and-a-half-year stay on Merseyside before leaving to join Barcelona in 2014.

Following his spell at the Camp Nou, Suarez moved to Atleti on a free transfer in 2020.

And his 21 league goals inspired Diego Simeone’s side to win La Liga last season.

However, Suarez has not been quite so prolific this term.

And that has led to transfer rumours around the 34-year-old as his contract is set to expire in the summer.
