The Last of Us will take “more than one” season to adapt the video game’s sequel, The Last of Us: Part II. HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama was officially renewed for a second season in January, but its creators have revealed the events of Part II will span at least two seasons of television.
The Last of Us: Part II was released on PlayStation 4 in 2020, and is a far lengthier game than its 2013 predecessor. The Last of Us video game takes around 15 hours of playtime to complete, whereas Part II takes around 25 hours.
This is in part because the sequel follows two intertwining story lines, with more action, more set-pieces, and a host of new characters introduced. As such, it was expected the TV show’s creators would need more than one season to encompass everything the game has to offer.

The show’s first season has followed the events of the video game fairly faithfully, so many fans had been wondering how faithful the second series would be given the game’s complex story. Now, the show’s creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have confirmed that the events of Part II will be spread over a minimum of two seasons.
In an interview with GQ, Mazin was asked if season two will adapt the whole story of the video game sequel, to which he said: “No. No way.”
Druckmann added: “It’s more than one season.”

The creative duo would not confirm exactly how many seasons are planned in order to fully tell the story of Part II. Mazin cryptically said: “You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct.”
HBO has not officially confirmed that a third season of The Last of Us is in the works, but given the overwhelming success of its first season, it is expected the network would be eager for the series to continue for as long as the creators deem necessary. Mazin has already confirmed that future seasons will have more infected and more action.
Some fans have complained that season one had little action and encounters with the zombie-like infected compared to the game. Addressing this in a virtual press conference, Mazin said: “There is more The Last of Us to come. It’s quite possible that there will be a lot more infected later. And perhaps different kinds.”
The season finale of The Last of Us airs March 13 at 9pm on Sky Atlantic.
