Havana Glasgow Film Festival returning to city next month for seventh edition

The Havana Glasgow Film Festival has announced its return to the city next month for what will be its seventh edition.

Glaswegians are being invited to soak up the best in Cuban culture and cinema at the festival, which will run as a hybrid of live and online events from Tuesday, November 16 to Sunday, November 21.

Organisers say the lineup, which will include screenings at the CCA and GFT, will be "packed full of the usual high quality mix of thought-provoking Cuban films, Cuban culture, discussion, debate and music".

This year's festival will focus on the resourcefulness and extraordinariness of Cuba during one of the toughest points in its history, with highlights including a day dedicated to Cuba’s unique approach to sustainability and climate change, featuring shorts, documentaries and discussion.

The featured director this year will be acclaimed filmmaker Arturo Sotto, who will present four of his films live at the festival, including the film noir 'Nido de Mantes' ('The Wasp Nest').

Filmmaker Rebecca Heidenberg, director of documentary 'Queens of the Revolution', will also join organisers for a live streamed Q&A to discuss her portrait of a cultural centre that paved the road for LGBTQ+ rights in Cuba.

Meanwhile co-director (and Havana native) Hugo Rivalta will be in Glasgow to introduce opening films 'Running for the Revolution' and 'Fidel Up Close', with the directors of both movies present too.

Film Passes, costing £15 / £7.50 allow access to all online films and events at the festival, with an additional cost for live events on a pay-what-you-can basis - except for their special screening of 'Castro's Spies' at the Glasgow Film Theatre.
