Has Giants coach Brian Daboll gone from Bono to Bozo?

Earlier this year, New York Giants co-owner John Mara was asked about the popularity of Brian Daboll, who had been named NFL Coach of the Year after taking the Giants to the playoffs for the first time in six seasons.

“We kid him. I mean, right now he’s Bono walking around New York City,” Mara said on SiriusXM NFL Radio in March.

“But I’ve told him, I’ve said, ‘In this business, it doesn’t take long to go from Bono to Bozo. So don’t get your head too big right now.’ But he has been great.”

At the time, that didn’t appear to be a prophecy, but things have changed since then. The Giants are unraveling after a 1-3 start and sit firmly in last place in the NFC East.

As a result, Daboll is no longer strutting around like the U2 frontman. He is also being seen as the root of many of the team’s problems rather than their savior. How the worm has turned.

The Giants are averaging just 11.5 points per game — the fewest in the NFL — while allowing the third-most points per game (30.5).

Daboll has been trying to keep his composure, but the play of his team has caused him to lose it at times. During Monday’s game against Seattle, he tossed a tablet aside after a short exchange with quarterback Daniel Jones.

The fans are staying positive for now, but with games against Miami and Buffalo over the next two weeks, the wheels could come flying off this wagon very quickly.

The honeymoon phase is over. Now Daboll’s seat is beginning to warm as fans lose patience.
