Harry Potter author JK Rowling renovating childhood home in Gloucestershire

Author JK Rowling is set to renovate her childhood home in Gloucestershire which may have inspired some of the events in Harry Potter.

The writer previously bought the Grade II-listed Church Cottage through a property company in her married name of Murray.

Scaffolding has now gone up around the Forest of Dean property, with planning agents winning permission to install two rear dormer windows and knock down and rebuild its garage, Gloucestershire Live reports.

Rowling lived with mother Anne, father Peter and sister Diane at the stone cottage until her mother developed MS and died in 1990.

Her father then rented out the detached, three-bedroom property and sold it to BBC producer Julian Mercer in 1995, who kept a signature Rowling had engraved in a window ledge.

When he put it on the market for £399,950 in 2011, many noticed the similarities between the cottage and the Harry Potter books.

For instance, it has a dingy cupboard under the stairs similar to the one aunt Petunia and uncle Vernon Dursley forced Harry Potter to live in before he left for Hogwarts.

It also has a cellar reminiscent of the one where Harry searches for the Philosopher's Stone in the first novel.

A planning permission report lists the other work which needs carrying out at the property, including repairing the roof, replacing the plastic gutters with metal ones and having the bathroom replaced.

It is not known why exactly Rowling bought the cottage or if she has further plans to make use of the property.

Gloucesteshire Live has attempted to contact Mrs Murray through Turcan Connell Solicitors and Asset Managers which act as company secretaries.
