Harry Kane defends 'devastated' Ryan Sessegnon and apologises to fans for 'immature mistakes'

Harry Kane has apologised to the Tottenham fans following the humiliating defeat at NS Mura in the Europa Conference League on Thursday evening.

Spurs were beaten 2-1 as their lowly ranked hosts scored with the final kick of the game to condemn Antonio Conte to his first defeat as head coach.

Tottenham had gone down to 10 men just half an hour in after Ryan Sessegnon's red card and while Kane netted with a fine chipped goal, the visitors fell apart in the final moments to leave their qualification from Group J hanging by a thread.

"It was unacceptable really," said captain for the night Kane. "We didn’t start well, went behind and then have gone down to 10 men and made it difficult for ourselves.

"In the second half we showed some fight and spirit and got ourselves back into the game and if anyone looked like scoring it was going to be yes. but an immature mistake at the end to concede a goal when we had all the play.

"It is unacceptable. A tough match for us, we just have to learn from it.

"[There's] anger, disappointment. As it should be, we were favourites to win this game but we knew we had to get it right. We knew they were a good side, we knew we had to be on it in all aspects and mentality was definitely the main one.

"We made some immature mistakes and got punished for them and that's what happens in Europe.

"All we can say is sorry to the travelling fans, sorry to the fans back home but we just have to keep working hard and turn things around."

He added: "This is down to us, our responsibility as players on the pitch to go out there and win the game and we didn’t do that today.

"Full credit to them. We have got stuff to learn from, we have got another game on Sunday. This one hurts, but we have to dust ourselves down and get ready for that one."

When asked what needed improving at Tottenham, Kane did not mince his words.

"Everything. We are working hard and training hard, the manager has only had a few weeks," he said.

"Every day we are learning new things, it is about getting that spirit and togetherness. We are working hard every day, we got a good win at the weekend, it is a shame we couldn't back that up today but we still have another game in the group to go. We will give it our all in the last group game."

Kane defended 21-year-old Sessegnon following his red card and said the young wing-back will bounce back from his disappointment.

"He's young and has not had too many European games. The refs are different, the atmosphere is different," said the striker.

"He is devastated but he is a young kid and will learn from it for sure. It is about getting around each other and helping each other.

"He has been working very hard, he'll bounce back and will be available for us and I am sure the next time he gets on the pitch he will do everything to help us."
