Happy Belated Birthday to legendary Spartan Kirk Gibson!

I meant to post this last night, so, even though it’s a little late, I could not pass up the opportunity to wish one of the most iconic Spartans of all time, Kirk Gibson, a happy 62nd birthday and take a moment to look back at his career.

Gibson, a native of Pontiac, Michigan, was an All-American Wide Receiver for Michigan State. Gibson is in the College Football Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in that sport, but, in what has become a little bit of a folk legend, Kirk is much better known for his time in the MLB as a baseball player where he won an MVP award in 1988 to go along with two World Series rings.

Gibson’s baseball career was essentially an accident. A star football player, it was at the suggestion of coach Darryl Rogers that Gibson plays baseball. In just one season in the sport, Gibson hit .390 and 16 home runs on his way to a first-round draft selection by the Detroit Tigers.

Gibson won a World Series with the Tigers in 1984, then again in 1988 with the Dodgers where he hit one of the most famous home runs of all time:

Gibson began and ended his career with his hometown Detroit Tigers and is now an on-air analyst for the team. Happy Birthday Kirk!
