'Hands-on' Kate Middleton is preparing for her children's return to school, says expert

The countdown is on for the big return to school for children up and down the country.

And the "hands-on" Duchess of Cambridge will be making sure her little ones are fully prepared for the new school year - just like other mums and dads, an expert has said.

After enjoying a long summer holiday, Prince George and Princess Charlotte are expected back in class next week at Thomas's Battersea.

And according to royal author Duncan Larcombe, Kate gets stuck in when it comes to getting the children organised.

He told OK! : "Kate had a very happy childhood and really enjoyed her school days, so I think the way she was brought up is being used as a template for her own three children.

"She’s a very hands-on mum, so she always makes sure she’s the one going with the children to buy school shoes as well as stocking up on school stationery."

On their return to school, eight-year-old Prince George will be going into Year 4, while six-year-old Princess Charlotte will be in the Year 2 group.

Their current school in south London caters for children up until the age of 13, so there's a few years yet before any big decisions will have to be made about the Cambridge children's future education.

But according to Duncan, Kate and husband Prince William will be already considering their options - especially when it comes to Prince George.

He added: "They may well plump for Eton, the school where kings and prime ministers go.

“But I wouldn’t be surprised if they plumped for Kate’s school, Marlborough. It’s a mixed school and a very good one, so they might want to make a statement and send the children there."

It's been reported that the Cambridges could be eyeing up a move to Windsor (BBC Children in Need/Comic Relief via Getty Images)

Meanwhile, it was reported earlier this week that Kate and William could be eyeing up a move to Windsor to be closer to the Queen and royal decision making.

Currently, the Cambridges divide their time between their London base of Kensington Palace, where they have their offices, and their country residence of Anmer Hall in Norfolk.

According to the Mail on Sunday, travelling to Norfolk for weekends has become too far and at Windsor, they could base the family there "full time and commute into London when required."

A source said: "Anmer Hall made sense while William was a helicopter pilot in East Anglia and it was useful for Christmases at Sandringham, but it doesn’t really work anymore.

"It’s a little too far away for weekends, but Windsor is a perfect compromise. They are eyeing up options in the area."
