HAMAS – the militant group that governs the Palestinian administration of the Gaza Strip – is reportedly set to agree to disarm as part of a wider peace agreement.
President Donald Trump has claimed that the US-brokered plan – reportedly organised by his controversial "Board of Peace" – has been agreed upon by Hamas, but an official statement is yet to be released. Israel has so far not commented.
Other groups classed as armed militant groups are also included in the deal.
Trump said Israel would withdraw from Gaza "as disarmament is completed" and called the agreement "a critical step towards Gaza finally being governed by a new Palestinian government".
“As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza being safe for its residents and its neighbors," Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.
It comes after a thinly-veiled ceasefire agreement was reached in October 2025, after which more than 1000 people have been killed as Israel continues its genocidal war and blockade of the Strip.
Israel has said that the ceasefire and further peace talks have stalled due to Hamas's refusal to disarm.
Speaking to the Press Association, figures on Trump's Board of Peace, who remained anonymous, suggested the disarmament of some groups in Gaza, including the police force, could happen in the next two weeks.
However, the transfer of Hamas's equipment and heavy weapons, as well as the decommissioning of bases and tunnel systems, is likely to take closer to a year – between 200 and 350 days, according to the unnamed official.
Previous Trump-brokered ceasefire agreements made with Iran since Israeli-US strikes sparked a war in the country have fallen flat, with Israel's continued attacks into Lebanon being a particular sticking point.
According to the BBC, a Trump-administration official has said that the president would be “very, very disappointed” if Israel did not adhere to the agreement.
Hamas announced earlier this month that it had dissolved its government in Gaza and was preparing to transfer power to a technical committee backed by the United Nations as part of the ceasefire deal.
Israel's assaults into Gaza and subsequent blocking of aid, food and water supplies and humanitarian support have killed more than 73,000 people, with two UN reports finding evidence that genocide is being committed against the Palestinian people in Gaza.
The UN independent international commission of inquiry (COI) said in 2025 that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Israel’s foreign ministry called the report “distorted and false”.
Last month, the UN COI found that Israel was continuing to commit genocide by targeting children. That report was dubbed a “libellous sham” by Israel.
The International Criminal Court has also sought the arrest of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The escalation of violence came after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7 2023, which killed around 1200 people and saw 251 taken hostage.
Israel’s military now controls more than half of Gaza, leaving millions of Palestinians confined to tent camps and heavily damaged urban neighbourhoods. Almost all of Gaza's roughly two million inhabitants have been displaced.
