Halsey Defends Sydney Sweeney Amid American Eagle Backlash: ‘Dumb Advertising Take’

Halsey has taken to social media to defend Sydney Sweeney amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the latter star’s recent American Eagle ad.

Halsey, who stars opposite Sweeney in the recently released flick Americana, shared (and promptly deleted) an Instagram Story urging followers to watch the film despite the backlash aimed at Sweeney and all *those* accusations of promoting eugenics.

“You should go see this movie,” Halsey wrote of the Tony Tost-directed crime thriller, which landed in cinemas earlier this month. The singer went on to describe the movie as “exceptional”, and said Tost’s “vision” supersedes all the hullabaloo surrounding its lead star.

“[Tost’s] work and his vision are greater than the 24 hr gossip tabloid denim bullshit,” Halsey wrote (per The Daily Mail).

“He’s an incredible artist who made a great film with a group of hardworking, talented people. If you love cinema, then you should know that cinema comes first,” Halsey added.

“This is cinema.”

In a follow-up post, Halsey reportedly clarified that she was defending the “hardworking director and his hardworking crew”, saying their efforts shouldn’t be diminished because of Sweeney’s American Eagle ad.

“I don’t … think that it’s fair for the news cycle to predatorily rip a hardworking director and his hardworking crew for this film that is completely separate from and unrelated to a (pretty dumb) advertising take,” Halsey wrote, in clear reference to the now-infamous denim ad

Over on X, Halsey reportedly elaborated on the sentiment, saying she was “upset” that the controversy is now being taken out on the “non-celebrity” people involved in Americana.

“I’m not upset that the film’s release is being hurt by the timing,” the singer wrote, per The Daily Mail.

“I am upset that a bunch of non-celebrity people involved in this film are being bullied by the media.”

Halsey then revealed she had said “everything I am permitted to say about my feelings on the ad,” before calling out fans who equated her involvement in the movie with her supposedly supporting eugenics.

“If you’re a fan of mine and think I ‘support eugenics’ then IDK what to say IDK why you’re a fan then TBH,” she concluded.

It all comes as Sweeney continues to endure backlash over the ad, which immediately raised eyebrows among fans who accused her of contributing to eugenicist messaging.

The fall out came to include everyone from Doja Cat to Donald Trump, though Sweeney has yet to explicitly address the controversy herself.
