Halftime Thoughts: MSU Football vs. WMU

Michigan State University and Western Michigan University meet for the sixteenth time overall. So far, Spartan fans should be happy. MSU looks better than last week, by a lot. Offensive improvements are abundant. Here are some halftime thoughts:

MSU’s Offense: Explosive & Versatile

First play of the game, QB Brian Lewerke hit WR Darrell Stewart on a Play Action Pass for 33 yards. Then, Elijah Collins takes his first carry of the game 29 yards deep into Bronco’s territory. Lewerke then throws a touchdown pass to TE Matt Dotson. Spartans score a touchdown in just one minute and 34 seconds on the first drive of the game.

MSU’s offensive creativity shined in the second quarter. Stewart and Lewerke ran a WR reverse pass. Brian Lewerke handed the ball off to Elijah Collins. Collins gave it to Stewart. Stewart hit Lewerke for a first down. Right after, Lewerke connected with Cody White.

Lewerke In Rythym

For the most part, Lewerke is in rhythm. Cool, calm, and collected. He hit multiple receivers with crisp passes. In particular, Lewerke and Darrell Stewart are in lockstep. Brian hit a wide-open Stewart with a beautiful, 42-yard throw. Even though Lewerke threw an interception, fans should be happy with this offensive showing.

Defense Still Dominant

DE Kenny Willekes had the first penalty for MSU in the second quarter, but, the defensive has taken care of business otherwise. CB Kalon Gervin made a huge open-field tackle to force a WMU punt. Willekes himself made a play for a loss of three yards. The Bronco’s offense moves the ball quickly. QB Jon Wassink has a quick throwing arm and high completion rate. He did connect with TE Giovanni Ricci for a touchdown. Look for MSU to put more pressure on Wassink in the second half.

Mistakes To Address

There is plenty to be optimistic about, however, there are some mistakes still present. Lewerke must be consistent. His wild throws have been costly with one interception. Connor Heyward fumbled late in the second quarter. Luckily enough, Xavier Henderson came in clutch with an interception to prevent a Broncos touchdown.
