Half of dog owners 'would rather travel with their pet than their partner'

Brit dog owners prefer to go on holiday with their pet than their partner, a study has claimed.

Some pet lovers say their four-legged friends are better company, better behaved, don't snore and don't hog the bed.

But most of them are unsure about rail travel as almost two-third of them said they have no idea of the rules concerning taking dogs on board.

To help, East Midlands Trains has launched a range of 'dog-friendly provisions' on selected routes to dog owners for a care-free travel.

The train operator will provide dog bowls at main stations and doggie treats on board in hopes to make travelling with four-legged friends easier.

The company has partnered with canine behaviourist, Colin Tennant, to roll out a 'Dog Train-ing' guide to educate the pet lovers of the do's and don'ts when taking their pooches on board.

In the video, Colin advised pet owners to keep their dogs on a lead and avoid letting them to sit on the seat.

He said: "The most important piece of equipment is your lead. It helps you not just control your dog but manoeuvre your dog around the trains.

"Whilst travelling on the train, don't let your dog sit on the seat. Make sure it can get underneath the seat, have a few treats with you to distract it and anything which gives your dog some attention and making sure that the journey is fun for both of you."

It came after a study of 1,000 British dog owners, commissioned by East Midlands Trains, showed that 51 per cent of them refused to go on holiday without their pets.
