Hail, thunder and sleet heading for Wales as warm weather is replaced by freezing temperatures

It may be the start of British Summer Time, but there’s a cold snap on the way with temperatures due to drop below freezing tonight.

Wales has basked in sunshine over the last few days, but forecasters are warning that hail, thunder and even sleet are on the way for some areas this coming week.

Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: “It will be turning colder with more changeable weather into next week.”

On Saturday, the highest temperature recorded in Wales was 15.8C in Tredegar – significantly higher than the March average of 8.5C.

But as the clocks went forward by an hour, there was a cloudy start to British Summer Time on Sunday morning.

Ms Mitchell said: “It should turn brighter during the afternoon, but temperatures will be down on recent days.”

Temperatures are due to reach 13C in Wales this afternoon, before dropping to -1C overnight amid light winds and clear spells.

Forecasters are expecting a cold and bright start to April on Monday with cloud gradually increasing from the northwest throughout the day.

Ms Mitchell said: “There will be rain at first on Tuesday, followed by sunny spells and some heavy and thundery showers.”

Meteorologist Derek Brockway said low pressure would bring a “cold snap” this week with some “wintry showers”.

He added: “There will be hail, thunder and sleet in places with snow on the mountains and overnight frost.”

Wednesday is set to bring sunshine and showers, followed by more showers and longer spells of rain on Thursday, then a cold and frosty night.

There are no weather warnings or flood warnings in place for the week ahead.
