GWR and LNER agree recovery plan after cracks found on Hitachi trains cause rail disruption

Hitachi Rail, train operators and the Government have agreed a service recovery plan to reintroduce more Class 800 and 385 trains after they were taken out of service on Saturday following the discovery of cracks.

Industry body the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) said Great Western Railway and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) will ramp up services following “rigorous safety checks”.

The industry has put in place “suitable criteria for the trains to meet before they can re-enter service”, the RDG said.

The disruption to rail services caused by the issue had been expected to continue for weeks.

On Monday, LNER posted a message on Twitter stating the issue is “likely to be going on for a number of weeks”.

A spokesman for the operator said: “LNER is working with Hitachi and other the rail industry partners to return as many trains back into service as safely and as quickly as possible.

“As investigations are continuing and the schedule for repairs is being developed, further information on timings will be released in due course.”

Great Western Railway (GWR) advised passengers with tickets for long-distance journeys on Monday “not to travel” as there was “no service or an extremely limited service” between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads, Swansea, Penzance, Hereford and Cheltenham Spa.
