GURUGRAM: Demanding caste-based census to end discrimination being meted out to backward classes, Congress submitted memorandum in the name of governor and chief minister through district administration in Gurugram.
Congress has submitted similar memorandum in different parts of the country.
Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government recently initiated the process for caste-based head count. Bihar has become the first state to carry caste-based head count. The Congress party is now demanding national caste-based census.
National chairman of OBC cell of Congress, Captain Ajay Singh Yadav, who is leading the movement from Congress for caste-based census, said in the absence of caste-based census figure, reservation for OBC in panchayat and local body election in Haryana and Maharashtra has been ended. “If Bihar can have caste-based census then why can’t Haryana and other states carry similar census,” said Yadav.
Yadav said, then UPA government started caste-based census in 2011 and census work was completed by 2014, but then BJP came into power. “Even after eight years, BJP government at centre has not released the report,” he said.
Objecting to the provision of creamy layer in OBC reservation, Yadav said government has included income, agriculture to decide the creamy layer due to which large number of people from OBC category are denied benefits of reservation. “If it continues like this, then one day government will end reservation for OBC in educational institutes and government jobs,” said Yadav.
The government should create a sperate OBC department.
He claims, around 50% of the total population of the country comes under OBC category and they should get reservation in accordance with the population share. He also demanded that OBC students should get scholarship. Opposing the privatisation, he further said the government is privatising airports, LIC, Railway and other government companies to end reservation.
