A 45-year-old police inspector was found dead under mysterious circumstances in the rest room of the Sadar police station in Gurgaon on Saturday afternoon. While initial reports suggested that the officer allegedly shot himself with his service revolver, Gurgaon police could not confirm the same.

Police officers insisted that they are investigating the matter from all angles and is not ruling out the possibility of death due to accidental shooting or other reasons.

Police carried out an inquest under section 174 of IPC at Sadar police station on Saturday.

According to the police, Inspector Kuldeep Singh, deployed at the Sadar police station, was working as additional station house officer since the SHO, Vijay Kumar, was on leave.

Singh was found lying in a pool of blood by a sentry on duty. He had been to the rest room to call him as Singh had been summoned by a senior officer for a meeting. After seeing Singh lying in a pool of blood, the sentry raised an alarm. Soon, the other officers posted at the Sadar police station rushed in. He was taken to the Medanta hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar, who rushed to the  Sadar police station, said that they were not ruling out anything. “Ballistic reports, forensic reports and statements will need to be obtained and scrutinised before we come to any conclusion,” he said.

Forensic and finger print experts of Gurgaon police reached the spot and collected samples.

Sources in the police department were also circumspect about the suicide theory as Singh was found to be cheerful and joking with someone on the phone minutes before the incident. The same was corroborated by the CCTV footage. He had even been seen checking his phone frequently.

Police are examining the CCTV footage and also go through the phone call details to ascertain the reason behind his mysterious death, sources added.

Sources also said that Singh was under stress because he had been working as a sub-inspector at the Sadar police station despite being promoted as an inspector five months back. He had been suddenly flooded with work and was tasked with clearing 37 case files. It added to his stress, they said. “He wanted to be posted as an SHO and work independently,” an official said.

The inspector, a native of Narnaul in Haryana, is survived by his wife and two sons. One probable reason for the suicide theory doing the rounds is that he was facing stress due to his elder son’s health-related problems.

Police however is likely to question the family members and also look into other reasons such as a possible departmental inquiry or the recent unravelling of the fake arms license racket.

Police officers said Singh came to the office around 9 am and behaved normally. “He was not tense or showed any outward feeling of depression during the four hours he was at police station prior to the incident,” an officer said.

He had served 16 years in the air force before joining Haryana police as sub-inspector in 2008. He was promoted as inspector five months earlier.

His body was handed over to the family members after a post-mortem was conducted by a medical board. The post-mortem confirmed that he died from a bullet injury to the heart.
