Gunman opens fire on kids, 12 and 13, who threw snowballs at car

Police are searching for a gunman who opened fire on a group of children who were throwing snowballs at cars.

Officers were called to a street in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, shortly before 8pm on Saturday where they found two children suffering from gunshot wounds.

Milwaukee Police said a 12-year-old girl was found injured at the scene near the city's centre, and a wounded 13-year-old boy was found minutes later.

Officers administered first aid to the injured pair.

Neither of the children's gunshot wounds were life-threatening and they were being treated at a local hospital, police added.

The force said the early stage of the investigation suggested both children were with a group of youngsters throwing snowballs at passing cars.

One of the snowballs struck a white Toyota and the driver of the car "fired shots into the group of kids, striking the two victims," Milwaukee Police said.

“It was like ‘boom, boom, boom, boom’ all in succession,” neighbour Pearlee Piggue, who heard the shooting, told local media.

"Do you really need to shoot somebody because they shot a snowball?" Piggue said. "He should turn himself in."

Some residents say they now want to move out, with one claiming her house has been caught in the crossfire before.

The force was appealing to anyone with information on the incident to contact them.
