Gun discovered near where 'reclusive' mother and son found dead in bushland

WA Police have revealed a firearm was found near the bodies of a mother and son who led a "reclusive lifestyle" before they were discovered dead at a property in Greenough, in the state's Mid West.

The bodies of 65-year-old Sally Evans and her 40-year-old son, Mark-Anthony Westney, were found close together on Sunday afternoon in bushland at Mr Westney's property on Brand Highway.

The pair was reported missing two days earlier by Ms Evans's former husband, who lives in the eastern states.

Detective Inspector Brett Ranford said the man became concerned for the pair's welfare after he received "correspondence" in the mail.

He would not provide details of the correspondence and would not say if police had discovered any suicide notes.

But Inspector Ranford said at this stage police did not believe any third parties were involved in the deaths.

He said the long-arm weapon was registered to Mr Westney, but would not say who police believed had used it.

"It's early in the investigation at this stage and until post-mortem results are known, it's too early to speculate," he said.

Inspector Ranford said it appeared the bodies had been at the scene for several days, with the last known sighting of the pair made in late February.

"Our investigations to date suggest they did lead a reclusive lifestyle," he said.

"That's why it's … important for us to speak to anyone who may have any contact or dealings with them leading up to March 6."

Anyone who spoke to Ms Evans or Mr Westney in late February or early March is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
