Guardian Daily: Crackdown on climate change protests

Legal affairs correspondent Afua Hirsch explains why the attorney general, Baroness Scotland, is considering asking the courts to get tough with high-profile direct-action protests. The move follows the decision in September by a jury at Maidstone crown court to clear six Greenpeace activists of criminal damage to Kingsnorth coal-fired power station. The jury accepted the protesters' argument that they intended to protect property from global warming.

Yesterday's unemployment statistics revealed that there are now more than a million people claiming jobless benefits. Alexandra Topping speaks to some of those made redundant in recent months.
