In medieval times the unconsecrated ground in Redcross Way was used as a graveyard for prostitutes. By the 18th century it had become a paupers’ burial ground. The now unused yard in Redcross Way S.E.1, was used in the 1990’s for the construction of the Jubilee Underground Line extension. The Security gate has been converted into a memorial shrine for the “Outcast Dead”. First established on Halloween 1998 the shrine has evolved and renewed (after removal by the landowner). It is now a living artwork and memorial to the outcast dead, with people leaving: soft toys, jewellery, bling, stones and other symbols of remembrance of the known and unknown
