Pig City by Louis Sachar

Pig City by Louis Sachar

This book is about a girl called Laura who goes to a garage sale and buys a red cap with a blue rim. On it it has the words "Pig City" emblazoned in silver. Laura wears the hat everywhere she goes. It is a rare sight to see her without it - in fact she is never without it! Laura likes it so much she even marries it! (No, not really!) She actually starts a club named after her hat, Pig City. The club only starts off with three members. Each may tell no one of the club – otherwise a very valuable secret of theirs will be shared with a lot of people!

The three members of Pig City are seeking a new member. They look for someone smart. That outlines one person. I will not tell you who that person is – you will have to find out for yourself. Laura writes a sentence on the backboard. She gets out of trouble but she does not lie. She gets jealous as the teacher's pet rubs her sentence out…

Dogs Don't Tell Jokes by Louis Sachar

Dogs Don

This book is really good. I would highly recommend this book to either a boy or a girl. It is about a boy called Gary Boone (everybody calls him Goon). His dream is to become a standup comic but the problem is that every time somebody talks to him he can't help telling a joke. The other problem is that none of his jokes are funny. Only one person laughs at his jokes but she is leaving.

One day a talent contest comes up and Gary really wants to enter…

What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge

What Katy Did

What Katy Did is a brilliant book but is told in old fashioned language so it is quite hard to read. I would recommend it to children aged between 9 and 11.

The book is about a young girl called Katy who is 12. She always tears her dresses and likes to boss her siblings around. She is forever falling over but what she does not realise is that the biggest fall of all is yet to come…
