Manchester United were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by a superb Grimsby Town, who survived a late comeback from the Premier League side to emerge victorious on penalties on a famous night at Blundell Park. David Artell’s League Two club dominated proceedings in the first 45 minutes as Charles Vernam opened the scoring, before Tyrell Warren, a former United academy prospect, doubled the advantage as he capitalised on Andre Onana’s mistake.

Ruben Amorim turned to his superstars on the bench, and Bryan Mbeumo halved the deficit with 15 minutes to play before Harry Maguire stooped low to nod in a late equaliser and force a penalty shootout in dramatic fashion. Neither side could miss until Clarke Oduor was denied by Onana, but he was reprieved by Christy Pym, who kept out Matheus Cunha.

The penalties kept flowing as players began having to step up again, and the responsibility landed on Mbeumo’s shoulders to keep United in it. He hit the crossbar, to seal a famous victory for the Lincolnshire outfit, who progress into the third round at United’s expense.

Further forward, No8 Evan Khouri is full of energy and is your typical box-to-box battler, and he will ensure that neither Mainoo or Ugarte get a minute’s peace in the middle of the park.

Amorim has gone strong. Stronger than perhaps he would have liked, but that is the situation that he and his side are in right now.

It was always going to be Andre Onana in net, giving the Cameroonian a chance to regain some match sharpness after his injury lay-off and also really stake his claim to be No1 after Altay Bayindir started both Premier League games.

It’s all change in the back three as youngsters Tyler Fredericson and Ayden Heaven are given a chance to impress alongside the experienced Harry Maguire, who is in a tussle with Matthijs de Ligt over that central centre-back spot.

In the engine room, it’s Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo as expected. There has been plenty reported in recent days about Mainoo’s future at Old Trafford, and he will get a chance to prove his worth to Amorim here alongside Ugarte, who seems to have fallen down the pecking order himself.

On the flanks, Diogo Dalot gets the nod with Amad Diallo further forward, and Patrick Dorgu’s inclusion highlights United’s lack of real options at left wing-back with Luke Shaw’s absence from the squad and recent arrival Diego Leon only making the bench.

Altay Bayindir is expected to leave the club before the transfer deadline, so he could come out in place of the returning Andre Onana, while Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven could make up a new back line.

Speaking ahead of the cup tie, Amorim confirmed defender Noussair Mazraoui is unlikely to make a return to action before the international break.

He said: “No, maybe he is going to return next week, we will see.

“But he’s near, we are just finishing some drills with him to be sure that he’s not going to have another problem.”

There should be minutes of Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee or youngster Chido Obi, though new striker Benjamin Sesko is set to start a game for the first time since joining from RB Leipzig.
