Grieving family say they faced 'emotional distress' after cemetery 'forgot' to dig grave

A grieving family said they endured further "emotional distress" after cemetery bosses "forgot" to dig a grave for their deceased dad.

More than 500 people travelled to attend Adam’s Maqsood's funeral, which took into account the mixed Muslim and Christian heritage of the family.

Some members who travelled from Bradford, Birmingham, Manchester, London allegedly had to book an extra day off work following the mix-up, LancsLive reported.

Mr Maqsood's family claim they were told the council had ‘forgotten’ to dig the 28-year-old's grave at Great Harwood Cemetery in time for a Thursday service on April 28.

But Great Harwood Cemetery insist arrangements for the funeral were carried out as per instructions.

Adam Maqsood, 28, was found unresponsive at his home in Wordsworth Drive, Great Harwood on April 24 and was later pronounced dead in hospital.

The dad-of-three's death originally prompted a murder investigation after he had suffered injuries in an alleged assault on Towngate in the early hours of that morning.

However, following a post-mortem, police later confirmed that his death was not being treated as suspicious.

The burial was then held the following day, however, Muslim funerals are usually carried out quickly.

But there had already been a two-day wait for Adam to be released due to the circumstances of his death.

Adam’s dad Max said: “We had paid for everything and we wanted the grave ready for Thursday.

"I said ‘can they not dig it on Wednesday afternoon?’ and they said ‘no, they’re short of staff’.”

He said they then arranged for it to be held at 11am on Friday, only to be told the grave would be ready for 1pm.

Eventually they managed to bring the ceremony forward to late morning, but still had to allow extra time by walking from the mosque to the cemetery rather than going in cars.

Sister Steph said: “The emotional stress Hyndburn council have caused my family is massive.”

However, a Hyndburn council representative said: “The agreement between Hyndburn Borough Council and the funeral organiser was for a service at 1pm on April 30.

“We later received an urgent request to move the funeral forward.

"Fortunately, we were able to accommodate this and the funeral was moved forward by over one hour.”

His older sister Steph Livesey said the dad of three young daughters “lived for his girls”.

She said: “He was a very doting father. He had a heart of gold, my brother.

"He was genuinely caring; his daughters were his life and he was the apple of his dad’s eye.

"He worked very hard for his family.”

Following the funeral, paying tribute to her brother, Steph, 39, described the ceremony in more positive terms.

She said: “It was just overwhelming. Because Adam was mixed race it was the first ‘blended funeral’ they have done and the imam read it in English.

“In the Muslim religion the women say goodbye in the house, but they let us stand halfway down the street and we actually watched the whole service.

"The Muslim faith opened up its arms to us. It was just beautiful. Adam was born and died in the same house on Wordsworth Drive,” she said.

“He was a very happy child surrounded by an enormous family all the time.

"On holidays mum took us to Australia and Pakistan and we were very lucky as children to have the parents that we have.

"He was a bit mischievous as a kid but in a good way, and he had a lot of friends. I’ve never heard a bad word about my brother. His friends have been fantastic.”

Father of Ava-Jayne, 8, Anna-Lesa, 6, and Ariana-Sarah, 4, Adam also leaves mum Lesa Wade, dad Max Maqsood and brothers and sisters Steph, Bobby, Nabia, Sabia and Zaq and a large extended family.
