Greggs trials anti-theft counters at stores in London, Birmingham, and Nottinghamshire

  • Greggs is trialling anti-theft counters at several stores, including locations in London, Birmingham, and Nottinghamshire, to combat rising shoplifting.
  • The new approach involves staff serving food and drink from behind theft-proof counters, replacing self-service displays that have been axed.
  • This initiative comes as shoplifting soared to a 20-year high in the year to March 2025, with retailers reporting out-of-control thefts.
  • While recent Office for National Statistics figures show a one per cent decrease in shoplifting year-on-year, rates remain "unacceptably high," according to Crime and Policing Minister Sarah Jone.
  • An example of the problem is Adam Gosling, who was given a suspended sentence for stealing from a single Greggs branch 38 times over six weeks, amounting to £1,817.50.
