Greggs to open new store in former McColl's convenience store

Greggs has confirmed it will be opening a new store in Bristol within the next few months. The UK chain will be taking over a former McColl's convenience store in Temple Quay.

Eighteen of Bristol's McColl's branches were saved when the company fell into administration in May this year through the Morrisons takeover. However, a spokesperson for the convenience store chain previously stated the site in Temple Quay would not be reopening, and its last day of trading was on March 11, 2022.

Greggs will be moving into 1, The Square in Temple Quay within the next few months, a spokesperson has said. This will mean the bakery giant will have 20 sites in the Bristol region.

A Greggs spokesperson said: “Greggs is due to open a new shop at Temple Quay in the next few months. While we are unable to share any details at the moment, we will be sure to share further information in the coming months.”

News of the new site comes after Greggs also confirmed that two new drive-thru takeaways could be coming to the Bristol area - and one of them could open by the end of the year. The bakery chain has plans to open drive-thru takeaways in Cribbs Causeway and in Abbey Wood retail park in Filton.

The Abbey Wood plans have previously been reported by BristolLive, but Greggs has now announced that this store could be open by the end of this year. “We can confirm we’re looking to open a drive-thru at Abbey Wood Retail Park later this year and will be sure to share information in due course,” a spokesperson said.

It was due to open alongside a Travelodge at the same site. There were some concerns at the time that the new hotel and takeaway would not have enough car parking spaces, with the plans providing for 46, and that there would be more congestion around the MoD roundabout.
