Greggs announces return of popular vegan steak bake

Greggs, the UK bakery chain, is bringing back its vegan steak bake after a two-year absence.

In honour of Veganuary, the vegan steak bake will be available in all Greggs shops nationwide from January 4 for only £2.

Many people in January try out a vegan diet in the Veganuary challenge. This involves people stopping eating anything made from animal products, such as eggs and milk and meat and cheese.

What is the vegan steak bake?

The vegan steak bake is an animal product-free version of the long-time favourite of Greggs. It was first launched in January 2020 at the same as the vegan sausage roll.

The vegan steak bake did not stay as a permanent feature like the sausage roll and has been removed for two years — but no more.

It has been "meticulously designed" to mirror some of the original Steak Bake’s classic features, including 96 layers of light puff pastry.

Instead of a traditional beef filling, Greggs filled the pastry package with Quorn savoury flavour mycoprotein pieces, diced onions, and meat-free gravy, to make it suitable for vegans.

Greggs has teased the return of the vegan steak bake on its social media this week, posting on X an image of a steak beak with a gif of late British singer and present Cilla Black singing "Surprise Surprise".

Fans are elated at the popular snack's return, with X users commenting underneath the post that this was a “huge day” and some even saying their “prayers have been answered”.
