San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has long been outspoken about the social and political landscape in this country.
And though Popovich decided to stand for the national anthem ahead of the Spurs’ first game of the NBA restart, the Spurs head coach wanted to make it clear where he stood amid the push for racial justice and the Black Lives Matter movement.
Popovich joined a video conference with reporters on Sunday, and the first question posed to Popovich was about the status of Marco Belinelli. Rather than go right into Belinelli’s status, Popovich instead delivered his own reflection on racial justice in America.
Popovich said to start:
“Our number one priority as far as the country and society is concerned is racial justice, actually racial injustice that exists in our country and trying to make everything just for all people. Just as a reminder, in this world a lot of people really do not understand the breadth and depth of this horrific situation that Black people have been in for so long.”
Popovich completed his statement by saying, “Marco Belinelli is out tonight.”
