A man who was shot by armed officers in south east London has been detained under the Mental Health Act, police have said.

The Met Police received multiple reports of a man with a firearm on Creek Road, Greenwich on August 5. Firearms officers arrived at the scene and shot the 36-year-old.

He was taken to hospital and his injuries were deemed as non-life threatening.

Regional director Sal Naseem said: "The discharge of police firearms is rare but when this occurs it is important a thorough and independent investigation takes place."

Following the incident, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) announced it would be opening an ivestigation.

A spokesman for the IOPC said previously: “Today (Friday), shortly after 4pm we were notified by the MPS that a man had received a gunshot injury as the result of a police shooting during an incident in Greenwich, south London.

“We have begun an independent investigation. Our investigators have been sent to the scene and we have started the post-incident procedures to start gathering evidence.”
