Greene stars, Giants stun Dockers in AFL thumping

Coach Adam Kingsley has hailed GWS's forward depth after Toby Greene and Jake Riccardi combined for nine goals to propel the Giants to a 70-point thumping of Fremantle at Giants Stadium.

The Giants slammed on more than 100 points for the third consecutive week despite the late withdrawal of spearhead Jesse Hogan, while dismantling a disappointing Dockers outfit for a 16.10 (106) to 5.6 (36) victory on Saturday.

Captain Greene was typically superb for the Giants as he gathered 16 disposals while booting four majors for the fifth time in 12 AFL matches, as Riccardi enjoyed what looms as a breakout performance.

"I think we've got really strong key forward depth on our list," Kingsley said, as No.1 draft pick Aaron Cadman also featured in the win as a late replacement for Hogan.

Riccardi finished with a career-high five goals but was just as prominent in the air as he pulled in eight marks including seven grabs inside 50.

The 23-year-old has now booted 11 majors in the past four matches, to ensure Kingsley has tough calls to make on his tall forward set-up when the Giants resume after their bye with a clash against Melbourne.

"When he launches at the ball, he looks like a big, strong, powerful key forward," Kingsley said of Riccardi.

"It's the moments where he doesn't, that potentially cause him and us issues.

"If you look at particularly the last three games, he's been really strong in that area of his game.

"The result of that is he's been able to hit the scoreboard, but we've been able to hit the scoreboard."

Tom Green (31 disposals, six clearances) and Stephen Coniglio (31, six) were also influential as the Giants dominated the stoppages with 39-29 clearances, including 16-6 at centre bounces.

Josh Kelly returned in style with 33 disposals, eight clearances and three goals after a stint on the sidelines, while Giants defender Sam Taylor impressed in his first match since round six.

The Giants (6-8) sent Taylor to emerging Dockers forward Jye Amiss and the All-Australian defender helped keep the 19-year-old scoreless after he had booted 15 majors in the previous five matches.

The Dockers (6-7) were unable to match the Giants' slick ball movement or at the stoppages, but also lacked the firepower to make the most of limited forward opportunities with Luke Jackson mostly playing in the ruck with Sean Darcy missing.

The sluggish visitors were outplayed from the opening exchanges and went into the first break trailing by four goals to none, to maintain their unwanted record of only leading once at quarter-time this season.

Caleb Serong (32 disposals, one goal) and Andrew Brayshaw (29) battled hard for the Dockers but they lacked enough midfield support.

"We were ordinary in all phases and they were very good. We couldn't match them," Dockers coach Justin Longmuir said.

"When you dish up a performance like that, you have to look at your preparation.

"We just didn't get the contest right all over the ground, all aspects. We got beaten-up."

Fremantle will look to bounce back when they host Essendon next at Optus Stadium on Saturday night, while GWS take their first back-to-back victories since 2021 into the bye.
