Green thumbs dig into inaugural garden comp

Judy Sharpe

It's no secret that there are plenty of skilled green thumbs around Newcastle, but for many years there hasn't been a place for them to show off their garden creations.

For that reason, real estate agent Michael Edwards has started a competition to find the best residential green space in Newcastle.

Entries are currently open in the Newcastle Garden Awards with categories including best small and large gardens, best small garden spaces and people's choice.

"The idea grew from my role in the property industry, where not only are we exposed to beautiful homes but equally, beautiful gardens," Mr Edwards said.

"There didn't seem to be a platform to showcase the many spectacular gardens across the Newcastle Region and equally the hard work, passion and dedication that is put in by their owners."

Mr Edwards is one of the judges and local garden guru Judy Sharpe and fellow industry stalwart Brian Bird round out the judging panel.

Ms Sharpe believes there are a lot of hidden gems out in the community.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing people's love of their little space and how they enhance it by plants or pots and plants," she said.

"We've got a few different categories, so it will be nice to include balconies and courtyards."

Ms Sharpe was previously involved in the Open Gardens scheme, but said there was a lot of the hesitation from local people to get involved due to privacy.

"So this way people can submit their own photos rather than having to open up their homes to enter," she said.

Entries close November 11 and can be submitted at newcastlesbestgarden.com.au.
