Green light for 37-storey Birmingham tower

City planners have backed the development of a 37-storey residential project in Birmingham.

The city council's planning committee has today approved the project by Taylor Grange which will see 264 serviced apartments at 210-211 Broad Street along with a bar, restaurant, gym and residents' lounge.

At just 31 feet wide and a first for Birmingham, the tower would be a so-called 'super slender' building due to the compact nature of the application site and its proximity to other existing and planned buildings.

The site is currently occupied by the vacant Transport House, the former home of the TGWU trade union, and also 117-118 Tennant Street at the rear - both of which are to be demolished as part of the scheme.

The building will be 382 feet, making it one of the tallest structures in Birmingham.

It has been designed by Jewellery Quarter-based practice Glancy Nicholls Architects.

Director Lisa Deering said: "Advances in engineering and construction technology have allowed us to design an iconic building that will enhance Birmingham's skyline and bring a new type of skyscraper to the city.

"It's great news that 211 Broad Street has been given the go-ahead and we're very much looking forward to seeing the building take shape.

"This is an exciting project to be part of and a key milestone for Birmingham's architecture."

The application site is opposite recently completed residential scheme The Bank, which reaches 33 storeys, and next door to Moda Living's 42-storey residential tower Mercian.
