The Green Bay Packers' 2023 season was marked by struggles in the secondary, ultimately leading to defensive coordinator Joe Barry's departure. Despite ranking ninth in passing yards allowed per game, the Packers managed just seven interceptions, tying a record low since 1940.

Star cornerback Jaire Alexander faced challenges both on and off the field, playing only seven games due to injuries and receiving a one-game suspension. However, he showed improvement towards the end of the season, including a crucial interception in a playoff victory.

First-round draft pick Eric Stokes continued to battle injuries, limiting his playing time to just three games. In his absence, rookie Carrington Valentine stepped up but faced challenges in coverage.

The safety group, led by Darnell Savage, had a mediocre season, prompting changes in the roster. Savage's contract was voided, indicating his likely departure in free agency. Other safeties like Jonathan Owens, Rudy Ford, and Anthony Johnson also face uncertain futures with the team.

Despite speculation of a potential trade, the Packers are committed to retaining Alexander, who signed a lucrative contract in 2022. Stokes will be given the opportunity to bounce back from injury-plagued seasons, with the team emphasizing his importance in the secondary.

Looking ahead, the Packers are expected to make significant moves in the offseason to strengthen their defensive backfield. With the new league year approaching, the team is likely to sign a veteran safety and target defensive backs in the upcoming draft.

Defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley emphasized the need for a safety who can make game-changing plays and prevent explosive plays, highlighting the team's focus on improving the secondary's performance.

As the Packers prepare for the 2024 season, addressing the issues in the defensive backfield will be a top priority to enhance the overall defensive performance and compete at a higher level in the upcoming season.
