Greater Manchester brewery launches Andy Burnham-inspired beer

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has inspired a new beer from a local brewery.

Named 'King of the North', the New England-style IPA has been created by Salford craft brewery Seven Brothers.

The limited-edition beer will raise money for those in the hospitality sector who are considered the most vulnerable.

The can has been decorated with cartoon castles, and a sketch of Burnham's spectacled eyes.

It's described as: "Packing a playful punch at 5% ABV, this beer is full of hoppy personality with a helping of northern charm."

The IPA launches just a week after Burnham's stand-off with the government over Tier 3 restrictions came to a head outside the Bridgewater Hall.

It was the week that saw him nicknamed 'King in the North'.

The Mayor now appears to have transcended politics to become something of a cultural icon.

Last week he was the subject of a Vogue article - "Suddenly, Inexplicably, We All Fancy Andy Burnham" - as well as being turned into a cartoon portrait by renowned artist Stanley Chow.

The Seven Brothers tribute to the politician will be sold for £4 through the brewery's web shop, as well as in other local establishments including BrewDog.

The brewery has teamed up with not-for-profit venture TipJar, adding a QR code to every can which will take you to a platform where you can leave a tip to be distributed to selected individuals.

Keith McAvoy, CEO of Seven Brothers Brewing Co said: “We can’t ignore the covid rates across our region but many businesses have been impacted by the constant rule changing and restrictions.

"Tier three has seen some establishments close, and they won’t open their doors again.

“Mirroring the spirit of Andy Burnham sticking up for his region, we want to back our sector too and do something to help, that’s why a percentage of sales from the ‘King of the North’ will be donated to hospitality charities.

“We urge people to stay safe and to support your local hospitality businesses. Follow the rules, buy a beer and together we can help businesses to make it out the other side of tier 3 and curfews.”
