Greater Manchester and UK weekend forecast as more thunderstorms and heavy rain to hit region

Greater Manchester is set to be hit with thundery downpours this weekend as August gets off to a damp start.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms from 4am today until 11.59pm tonight.

The warning covers parts of northern England, including Greater Manchester, North Wales, and central Scotland.

According to the Met Office, some places could see around 20mm to 30mm of rain in a relatively short time period and there is a chance that some places could see as much as 50mm to 70mm building up over the course of the day.

People living in the north of England have been warned that the downpours seen across the region on Friday are unlikely to ease over the course of the weekend.

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst said: “Low pressure is in charge of the UK’s weather at the moment – it’s a very slow-moving area of low pressure, so it’s not going anywhere quickly.

“It’s leading to bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms which you have seen through the course of Friday, and we have seen flooding in places too.

“This is going to continue through the weekend, particularly across the northern half of the UK where the showers will be slow-moving compared to southern areas, where it’s a little bit windier."

Forecasters have also warned that some places may see travel disruption and flooding due to the heavy slow-moving showers.

Temperatures in Greater Manchester are expected to reach a maximum of 19C on Saturday.

Here's the outlook in or region for the rest of the weekend.

Saturday forecast for the north West

The Met Office says: "A band of rain, heavy at times, will move across the region through the morning. Turning brighter for the afternoon, though slow-moving showers developing, some possibly thundery with hail. Staying breezy towards coastal locations and feeling rather cool. Maximum temperature 19 °C.

"Scattered showers continuing through the night, some heavy with the risk of hail and thunder. Winds remaining generally light, but staying breezy towards the coast. Staying fairly mild. Minimum temperature 11 °C."

Sunday forecast for the north west

The Met Office says: "Scattered showers throughout the day, with a continued risk of some heavy and thundery outbreaks. Clouds breaking to give sunny spells between downpours. Feeling cooler, particularly at breezy coastal locations. Maximum temperature 18 °C."

Monday to Wednesday forecast for the north west

The Met Office says: "Unsettled weather continuing through into next week with scattered showers on Monday easing into Tuesday giving sunny spells before a heavy band of rain moves across the region through Wednesday"
