Granit Xhaka statement issued by Swiss FA after outburst at Arsenal fans

The Swiss FA have confirmed Granit Xhaka will remain as national team captain.

Xhaka's Arsenal future remains unclear after his outburst at supporters during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace .

The midfielder reacted angrily when fans cheered his substitution, cupping his ear before appearing to tell supporters to 'f*** off'.

Xhaka is set for crunch talks with Arsenal boss Unai Emery, who suggested his captain had made a mistake with his reaction.

The 27-year-old is also Switzerland skipper and the FA have confirmed they have spoken to the midfielder about his role.

"We are in contract with Granit. We appreciate the qualities and the importance he possess for the national team. As a result, his standing will not change," a statement read.

Arsenal return to action against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup this week and it is unclear if the midfielder will be involved.

Defender Hector Bellerin has called on supporters to get behind his teammate.

“We are all humans,” said the Spaniard. “We all have emotions, and sometimes it's not easy dealing with them.

“It's time to lift each other up, not to push each other away. We only win when we are together.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit has slammed the midfielder and says he should be stripped of the captaincy.

"I have never seen something like what happened with Granit Xhaka before. For me, he can't be the Arsenal captain any longer. It's impossible, what he did was unacceptable," he told Paddy Power.

"What he did on the pitch is one thing, I've made it clear that I don't know what he adds to the team.

"But what Xhaka did as he left the pitch is totally different. You can't do that - it's like betrayal in England."
