Grandad breaks arm running at school sports day

A grandad who ran the father's race for his granddaughter’s sports day fractured his arm after he tripped at the finish line - but says it was all in "good spirit". James Kewley, 46, had promised to run in the race after his five-year-old granddaughter, Ella, begged him to take part.

Little Ella won all her races, as did her mum, Georgia Kewley, 25, and James was hoping to do the same when it was his turn. James was running well until he tripped on a bump in the grass, falling on his face and crushing his left arm underneath him.

The owner of a construction company said he went straight back to work despite his arm being “twice the size”. He visited the hospital who told him the injury looks like a fracture.

James is due to go back on Monday for an X-ray to confirm the injury. James said: “The grass was so dry. I must have hit a bump and I crushed my arm.

“It was twice the size. It was really swollen. There was a bone sticking out. I have a black eye.

“They told me it looks like a fracture. But it will repair. It’s all in good spirit.”

Ella’s mum Georgia, a labourer, said she “begged” for her granddad run in the father’s race. She said: “She was begging him. She kept saying ‘can you do it for me grandad?’

“When he fell I was shocked. All his weight went on his arm. As he sat up his arm was all twisted. But he’s ok and sees the funny side.”

Georgia said little Ella smashed all her races. She said: “She won them all. I won the mum’s one too.

“Then dad fell but at least he came in some sort of place.”

James added: “Ella had her head in her hands when I fell. I’m not sure I’ll do it next year.

“Unless I’ve had a bit of training.”
