Grand National: Outrage at Aintree drinks prices as some call for a boycott

People have been divided over the cost of drinks at racecourse bars as the 2022 Grand National gets underway with some saying 'boycott the event'.

The famous event returned yesterday - in person for the first time since 2019 - with NHS Day, a day to honour the efforts of staff during the coronavirus pandemic.

It will run until April 9, when one horse will be crowned winner of the world's greatest steeplechase, the Liverpool Echo reports.

People heading to Aintree might be thinking how much money they should take or plan to spend.

Prices range from £2.30 for a mixer to £7.20 for some pints, which some have said is a bit steep. The list in full can be found below.

A number of people took to social media to voice their opinions on the price list, with some thinking they're too expensive.

Karl Purcell said: "Simple, don't go. Boycott such events until they bring down the prices".

Lisa Astbury said: "Just means these sorts of events will be for the elite, people with so much money they don't care what a pint costs. Restaurant prices and travel are going the same way.

"Of course they need to recoup some losses of earnings during Covid, but don't shoot yourselves in the foot!"

Chris Duffy said: "Daylight robbery", while Jack P said: "£7 for a pint? Unlucky". Diane McDonald said: Can be solved easily just don't go."

Other people don't see any issue with the prices. Many think they're to be expected when you go to an event.

Amanda McShane said: "£5.50 for a JD, that's cheap compared to the bars you crawl in after 2 for 1. Or if everyone has an issue paying for it don't go".

Rachel Salters said: "Don’t think the prices are that bad."

Neil Harwood said: "That's the prices I would expect tbh" [sic].

Maria Price added: "Not so bad for an event like that you can pay this in Liverpool town centre of a night."

The ECHO has published a list of drink prices for the bars at the Grand National.

An Aintree spokesperson told the ECHO : “As we know, prices for all commodities are rising at the moment and these prices are reflective of society today. If you look at other major sporting events, these prices are comparable.

"There’s a lot of set up costs with a major sporting event and these costs are reflective of that.

"At The Jockey Club, any profits are reinvested into British Horseracing.”
